Mountains and hills

The CPIE is located in the town of Aurillac at the foot of the Monts du Cantal mountain range.
Wide U-shaped valleys extend out from spectacular summits such as the Puy Mary, ranked a national “Grand Site”, the PuyGriou, thePlomb du Cantal and Roc d’Hozière. These valleys cross the area and drain water towards the Loire and Garonne river basins.

A close look at the different land and rock formations in Cantal reveals a fascinating history of volcanic activity. Steeped in volcanic history, the mountains offer magnificent, emblematic sites (domes, lava flows, waterfalls, cliff faces) and all sorts of natural ecosystems at different altitudes. There is a great deal to discover in the area, including sites of special geological interest, natural sites and rural heritage sites. Their presence also makes us carefully consider how to respect and safeguard this beautiful natural heritage.

Cantal also has high plains known as the Planèze near St-Flour, the Limon and the Salers, that have been formed by basalt lava flowsand volcanic activity several million years ago.

In other parts of Cantal, the mountains are replaced by rolling hills covered witha mixture of woodland, fields and crops. This is the case in the north-west in the Artense area, the north-east towards the Margeride area and south of Aurillac in the Châtaigneraie area. Here we are on ancient basement rock made up of granite andmica-schist.

Milieux naturels

Natural ecosystems

Cantal has a variety of different natural ecosystems: woodland and forests, mountain ridges and summits, pastureland at high altitude known as estives, meadows, land for crops and grazing, shortgrasslands, drylands and wetlands. This diversity is theresult of the different land reliefs, exposure and soil composition across the area as well as farming and forestry activity.

Woodland ecosystems

The woodland ecosystems in Cantal are largely made up of beech forests or a mixture of beech/fir forests in the mountains. Elsewhere, there are Scots pine forests and also oak tree forests both mixed with other species and on their own.

Covering 28% of the land area and spread over 141,500 hectares, woodland in Cantal covers almost as much land as France’s national average. Woodland is a prominent feature in the area and it plays an important part in shaping the natural landscape.

Dryland ecosystems

Dryland can be found mainly on the limestone hillsides around the town of Maurs and near Aurillac. This ecosystem is covered in short grassland or shrubland with juniper and boxwood. Dryland is home to around forty different species of orchid and all sorts of differentwildlife found in the southern part of France.

Mountain ecosystems

At altitude on the mountain ridges, summits and glacial cirques, the low growing vegetation is seemingly uniform. As well as plants typical of the Alps or the Pyrenees, there are also plants whose origin dates back to the ice age and some rare and protected species of animals.

This landscape is actually a mosaic of different types of vegetation(short grassland, moorland dominated by Pyrenean broom, cushion plants, tall grasses and megaphorbe meadows on wet soil).

Wetland ecosystems

Wetlandsare often considered as ecosystemsthat provide a splendid array offlowering plants. They are also of great importance in providing a habitat for nesting wildfowl and migrating birds as well as some amphibians and insects particularly sensitive to environmental conditions. Wetlands also play a role in managing water resources as they provide water reservoirs and slow down the flow of water.

Short grassland and wet moorland

This ecosystem includes swamps and marshes, bogs and wet prairies with bulrushes.

Bogs

Cantal has one of the highest concentrations of bogs in France and they offer both a remarkable and surprising landscape. Bogs contain various amounts of water and are found in areas with marshes and woodland.

Eau

Water

Water is present in many different forms across the whole of Cantal: flowing water (rivers, waterfalls), areas of still water (lakes, wetlands) and subsurface water (springs).

Reservoirs

The largest reservoirs both in terms of surface area and volume are the reservoirs of large dams in the area such as Garabit-Grandval, Enchanet, Saint-Etienne-Cantalès or Bort-les-Orgues.

Subsurface water

The size, quality and vulnerability of aquifers is closely related to the geological context. In Cantal, this is largely made up of cracked and fracturedrocks (volcanic rock in the Massif area and granite rock in the Margeride area).

Apart from the bottom of the valleys (e.g. the Maronne, Santoire, Cère, Jordanne) where there is a very good supply of sand and alluvial pebbles, the capacity of the soil in the area to retain water is generally low.As a result, aquifers here do not produce a lot of water, cover small surface areas and areaffected by low water periods and pollution.

There are many springs across Cantal whose flow of water can quickly vary depending on the amount of rainfall.
